Stuttering league start for Kaizer Chiefs after TS Galaxy stalemate

Kaizer Chiefs had to settle for a 0-0 draw against TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon in their opening league match of the PSL season.

Some exciting new signings from the Glamour Boys meant expectations had been high heading into the season.

However, there is clearly still work to be done after a workmanlike yet uninspired performance from the Soweto side. In a match in which neither team really sparked to life, the stalemate was a fair reflection of the 95 minutes in Nelspruit.

The first half proved to be a rather dour, lackluster affair and on Chiefs’ part, despite enjoying plenty of ball possession, there was a disappointing amount of end product in and around the opposition box.

It was Galaxy who enjoyed the first shot in anger in the game when Wayde Lekay got behind a long range shot, a belter of an effort flying inches over Bruce Bvuma’s crossbar in the 21st minute.

Amakhosi had their first chance three minutes later when Njabulo Blom, again playing at right-back, lobbed a long throw into the box. The ball was well met by Samir Nurkovic, although the Serbian’s flicked header was brilliantly saved by Galaxy keeper Vasilije Kolak.

Nurkovic also fired in a shot from range in the 30th minuet which flew wide of the mark, before Phathutshedzo Nange struck a rising shot over from bar from 20-metres out, following some good interplay involving Cole Alexander, Nurkovic and Bernard Parker in the 37th minute. That proved to be the last goalmouth action from either team in the first half.

Following the restart, the game opened up nicely – as the hosts came out and tried to get on the front foot, Chiefs also had moments when they looked a threat on the counter.

Still though chances remained at a premium, until the 67th minute that is, when Sifiso Hlanti’s square ball found Khama Billiat in the box, but the former Mamelodi Sundowns man lost his cool and skied the ball into the stands.

The game was very evenly balanced as it moved into the final quarter in Mpumalanga, as was seen when the Rockets had a couple of chances of their own – Mokete Mogaila pulled an effort wide of the mark in the 72nd minute before Mohammed Anas’ strike from distance was comfortably held by Bvuma five minutes later.

With five minutes to go, Amakhosi substitute Keagan Dolly looked set to pull the trigger in front of goal only to have the ball taken off him with a superb sliding challenge from Ebrahim Seedat.

Neither side was able to create anything after that and a share of the spoils it was.
